I Cannot Take This Anymore!

1 week has passed since I officially started my on-job-training. It is a monotonous job, a boring routine that I will be performing for the next 1 year and 2 months. I’ve been sent to the various posts to experience first hand how to handle the possible scenario, which may happen while you are on duty. Time seem to come to a standstill while you are on duty because sometimes I have to stand for 2 ½ hrs continuously without any soul interacting with me for some stations. Meanwhile I think I must have aged quite a bit due to the drastic change in sleeping pattern. For the 2 duties I have done so far, I have only managed to catch 5 hours of sleep for each duty day. It is true there are shifts so people will replace you once your shift end but it is not always easy to fall into an immediate deep sleep once you enter the sleeping bunk. Pimples started to sprout around my face. Moustaches seemed to grow faster than ever. Dark eye ring is starting to become part of my facial appearance. I think I’m starting to have a certain zombie look. I didn’t really get to rest very well during my duty off period because the living condition of the bunk is not really that wonderful. It is extremely hot and the noisy workplaces around the base disrupt my sleep very often. I hoped the on-job-training would end soon so that after my duty finished I can travel home to have my well-deserved rest.

I injured my left knee during 1 of the exercise in SSC5. Previously it was right and now it is left. Apparently, the “ACT ACT TERRORIST” tried to shove a FAKE FAKE parang under my throat and so in the name of ‘honour’ and ‘bravery’ I turned around and slammed him over my shoulder but that guy weight more than me and we both land on my left knee. Ever since then, the left knee start to give me trouble whenever I stand too long during duty or whenever I start any exercising. I have no idea what to do now except to wait silently and hope the pain will go away because I am currently undergoing on-job-training and it will not look nice if I see a medical officer and he give me a status sheet to excuse lower limb for a period of time. (Garang and responsible ok!)

So meanwhile during our off duty we were not allowed to book out and thus we have to stay in and rest in preparation for our next duty while the duty platoon get to go home and report the next following day. There is really nothing much to do while staying in. We slept most of the time, waked up for meals, visited the canteen for some light snacks, used computer and watched TV at night. I am bored stiff but again some things cannot be helped. I started to think a lot while stoning around..especially during the night when hours seem so long and it is only just you. It get pretty lonely and I couldn’t really adjusted to this “short-term” lifestyle. I will post another blog to explain what exactly I mean.

The “would-be commandos-very soon” are back. Very soon, Class 24 will have full attendance again if nothing goes wrong. Very soon we shall sing “We had joy we had fun we had Seasons in the sun” Come on everyone..let’s sing together shall we?

Joanne Peh and No No she didn't wear this outfit to eat cheese prata yesterday..What a pity.. Posted by Hello

There is this cheese prata shop in west coast area near NUS called “NIQQI THE CHEESE PRATA SHOP” which served delicious cheese prata. I think this is not a very “BIG” piece of news since I guessed almost all my friends know of its existence. I was introduced to this eatery by my friend in 2002 where we held our NYAA expedition at West Coast Park nearby. It was pretty late... Macdonald and Mac café were not there during that time and we were starving badly so we walked from West Coast Park to NIQQI THE CHEESE PRATA SHOP and indulged ourselves with delicious cheese prata and teh peng.

Ever since then, I’ve been making regular visit to the cheese prata shop to get my regular fix of delicious cheese prata. I patronized the shop with my poly friends and brudders. I patronized the shop with One True Love in the past. I patronized the shop with my army buddies. And everytime I patronized the shop it’s always the same old order. “Uncle 1 Cheese and 1 Koh Sung (meaning plain) + 1 teh peng ( Ice-tea)..” whether it’s windy or rainy outside. ( Feng Yu Bu Gai ).

And so yesterday I patronized the cheese prata shop with my brudders again and you will never be able to guess who I saw. To my surprise, a lady whom I considered very pretty and Singaporean who considered her a rising young star was sitting less than 5M across my table eating prata. She is none other than Joanne Peh. At first I wasn’t sure whether it was her. I said to my friend: “eh that table the lady very pretty lei. She looks like Joanne Peh”. His reply: “Eh you gun do ar? She is Joanne Peh la.. The one who act in the NKF drama serial loh.” I must admit she indeed have that X factor personality. I think she will be able to go far..perhaps maybe even further than Fann Wong if luck permits.

Sunshine Girl

I saw a SUNSHINE girl on my way back from camp.. I believed she is a undergraduate from NTU..don't ask me why..intuition perhaps. She seems to glow with vitality and she wear a beautiful smile on her face.

Some things are only meant for you to admire that from afar. But still I'm glad I managed to catch some SUNSHINE today.

Return Me back my Ring..you Idiot! My ring do not inscribed " 1 Ring To Rule Them All " K ! Posted by Hello

My Precioussss

A few years ago…OK maybe not that long. 1 or 2 years back perhaps if I remembered correctly; I bought a One-true-love a pair of ring for Valentine Day. If I still remembered correctly, the pair of ring cost around $60. Perhaps right now $60 is not very expensive, I still can afford it but during that time I was still an unemployed polytechnic student so in a sense it burned a huge hole in my pocket. Being a "filthy poor bastard" gentlemen, I didn’t voice out anything because after all, One-true-love was my everything during that time.

Fast forward to the present; you may ask why I decided to post this topic out of the sudden. Let me answer you this question. It is because while I was doing my area cleaning in my room, I discovered to my horror…THE RING IS MISSING! I searched high and low for it but still the ring refuse to recognize it owner and continue to play hide and seek with me. Nah Beh Chow Barney. Wait till I lost my temper and take it to the pawn shop to redeem some $$ then the ring know what is the real meaning of END OF WORLD. (Kidding Of Coz) Or maybe perhaps I sensed a conspiracy. GOLLUM, the character from Lord of the Ring has mistaken for my ring as his “1 ring to rule them all” ring. Dammit..wait till I find him and skin his backside then he know when to stop hissing “ My Preciousssss”

Anyway, today also mark the end of my break. Tomorrow I will be reporting to Tuas Naval Base for my on-job-training. Another new environment, another group of people to adapt to. I hope everything will turn out fine.

I read this book “Tuesdays with Morrie” during my 2 days break. Somehow I find it hard to believe there is such person who is so optimistic, even though he is suffering himself and he is dying. There is 1 phrase in the book which struck me deeply. It says something like this: “once you are about to experience death, everything seem clearer to you.”

Tuesdays With Morrie's are the most basic lessons, but in a world full of cynicism, consumerism, and disenfranchised people, they need to be given again and again: Take time to stare out the window instead of at your computer screen. Laugh. It's natural to die. Love is how you stay alive.

Morrie Schwartz is our messenger. We listen because he treats us with respect, he makes us laugh, and he's learned "how to give out love, and to let it come in."

To Changi, With Love

After 3 months of training, countless tonnes of sweat, a little of blood but no tears, a whole load of body and joint aches, countless projects of Sai Kang (Shit Work) , volumes of laughter and fun, moments of anguish and exasperation, a single me and the whole lot of brudders…the 5th Sea Soldier Course has officially end.

The passing out parade was a simple ceremony. There were not many people present because it was held on a Monday afternoon. We had our first official rehearsal on the Monday morning itself right after our breakfast. We practiced, practiced and practiced to get our drills right. It was tiring but nevertheless it was going to be the last time SSC 5 members are striving towards a common goal - - to have a fault-free parade. The skies opened up and thunderstorm and lightning flashes across the sky during lunch time hour. We were secretly worried whether the parade be postpone/cancel to another day. But the ironic thing about stormy weather is that the word “Thunderstorm” actually belongs to part of our course ensign. It practically refers to US in Changi Naval Base. Don’t ask me why thunderstorm...I still don’t get it today. As far as I could remember, the last SSC 4 parade also encountered thunderstorm on the parade day itself.

I didn’t bring along my digicam to take any shot. It is a military base. Cameras are prohibited to protect sensitive information. However, the funny thing that occurred right after the parade was; some family members of my platoon mates apparently went to the wharves area to take some shots of the LST (it’s a ship by the way) and the submarines! CSM went into overdrive. He promptly exclaimed those trainees with shots of submarines/ships will be going DB(detention barracks) right after the parade instead of their usual posting. Upon hearing this news, a fellow trainee was so worried that he went into an overdrive and ran towards the wharf which was at least 30-40 metres to prevent more shots from being taken. I think CSM was only half-joking regarding the matter but he took it damn seriously.

The instructors congratulated us. Buddies say good bye to one another. Firm handshakes were exchanged. But for the corporals, we will be seeing each other in Changi Naval Base 3 weeks from now for our 3 weeks commander course. How about another round of fun..You might say?

Meanwhile, I will be reporting to Tuas Naval Base on Thursday for my On-Job-Training. I will take these 2 days to give myself a really deserved rest and do some area cleaning on my room. It’s getting messy.

Miss Siew Ying Birthday Dinner !

My former poly classmate, good friend and member of the famed Class 24 Miss Siew Ying celebrated her advanced 21st birthday at a Chinese restaurant around Tiong Bahru area. Her birthday was supposed to be on the 21st April but due to her “examination commitment” at NTU, she decided or was forced “as what she said” to celebrated her birthday earlier than usual.

My very creative friend, also member of Class 24 Mr Jireh created miracles by compiling some of the memorable photos we took during our poly days and made it into a magazine especially for her. YES…I believed it is truly the 1 and only magazine that best described the happy times we ( I mean our class, not the 2 of us) spent together, the transformation from teenagers to young adults and of course the “evolution” of Miss Siew Ying from Little Red Riding Hood to a confident and aspiring undergraduate. We presented the magazine to her when she approached our table to chat with us. But we were totally unexpected of what come next after she flipped open the book. She CRIED….I guessed she was really touched by the effort Mr Jireh put in and frankly speaking this is the first time I saw anyone cried not because of sadness but because she was really happy/touched.
My initial reaction when I first saw the book share the same sentiment except in my case I did not cried…* Big Boy don’t cry K * I was pleasantly surprised to see those pictures. I was ecstatic to be reminded of the crazy stuff we did together. We were young then without much worry about our future unlike now…The magazine does not come cheap. It cost $30 to produce but I felt it’s worth every penny we may have to pay for it. I considered good memories as priceless. I considered myself extremely lucky to know such a bunch of great classmates and friends who still maintained regular contacts with each other even though it has been 1 year since we last graduated.

On my way back to home, Miss Celin *our class mother aka tau kua* commented with sadness that it’s such a pity time passes by so quickly. I agreed with her; Yes there is no way we can go by to the past and resume those activities. But I also disagreed with her for feeling a tinge sadness because we can all say we spend our teenage years together and for once, we were truly happy in each other company. As the Chinese saying:” 不在乎天长地久,只在乎曾经拥有。"

But somehow I seemed to be contradicting myself when I placed my above thoughts on relationship matters. During my previous post, I mentioned that PERHAPS I already got over her and seem ready to start a relationship. But guess what, I dreamt of her again while sleeping during 1 of those nights in my bunk. And things became a little too coincidence when my good buddy SMS me while taking the train on his way home after the birthday dinner “I just saw Miss Penguin” Of course he did not type the word miss penguin. Dammit.. It’s just a term to protect people privacy. I think my heart skipped a beat but I regained my composure and replied:” Issit? I think perhaps she is going home after her friend birthday celebration”.

Suddenly I felt heaven has decided to play a cruel joke on me. But then I’m game enough the take the joke. Ha ha

My good friend Mr Darren ( yes it's that hard core smoker ) is going to ROC today for his SISPEC ASLC training. It is a make or break exercise as this will ultimately decide whether he is qualifed to make the grade as a 3rd Sergeant. I wish him good luck and please..come back in 1 piece. Bon voyage. Posted by Hello

Sea Expedition

In SAF, when a course you are undergoing is about to end, it usually marked by a significant event. In BMTC we have the 24km route march. In SISPEC, we have the 32km route march. In SSC, we have the ultimate Sea Expedition.

For our batch SSC5, CO decided that we should end our sea expedition at Kallang Basin. For your info, the longest distance the last few batches have traveled to is only ECP Big Splash. We are worried whether if we are able to last through the whole journey. We put in a lot of preparations for this event. We did all the background work and logistics. Frankly speaking, we were overwhelmed by the whole load of Sai Kang waiting for us to square them away.

On the day itself, we received good news the tide is in our favour. In another words, it mean the current is not against us. It means theoretically we will have an easier time to row out of Changi Naval Base. We started rowing when the day breaks. 1 thing it hit you most when you row is that your back hurts badly due to the awkward position you place your body to row the boat. Some of us were lucky. We row continuously. We row furiously to catch the tide. Some of us were lucky and took 1hours and 20 mins to reach our first check point. Those who were left behind were dragged back by the current. For every stroke they applied to push the boat forward, the current move the boat 2 steps back. With the boat heaving up and down, I waited for the rest of the team to reach our first check point. Just when I thought I could have a little rest, I was starting to experience sea sickness. It is not easy to be stuck on the same spot for ½ hours seeing distant object heaving up and down while you are stationary in your boat. I stuff myself with preserved plum and countered the effect of sea sickness. And sorry to disappointed everyone… I DID NOT puke.

Rowing the boat is all about teamwork. Everyone must co-ordinate their strokes in order for the boat to move forward effectively. Paddle too hard on the left, too light on the right and the boat will move left instead of straight. Get what I mean? Another thing to note is the method you dig your oars inside the water. It is not the number of cycles you dig. It is all about the effort and amount of strength you put in. A good stroke involve is digging your oars deep inside the water and pulling the oars backward with your entire body, back and arms to move the boat forward. It is not an easy task ad definitely no no for the weak. My boat has a hard time doing the above things. There were a lot of times I was frustrated about the lack of progress. There was times where I almost lost my temper. I coaxed, I cajoled, and I tried to cheer the team up but to no avail. Perhaps it was the weather; perhaps it was the sea sickness they were suffering from. In the end I just kept quiet and continued rowing.

The highlight of the expedition happened at ECP. We were shagged, we were suffering and we weredying. We have rowed for 8 hours. But somehow, some ways our Platoon Sergeant conjured up magic and found 2 ladies from VJC to cheer for us. We went wild. We put in our best effort. We tried to look Garang when in fact we are dying. We chanted their School name “VJC” as we rowed. The 2 ladies even cheered our boat when we went past them. The reason being; we are the LAST boat. I could hear the words faintly:” Jia You! Catch up with them” Even though we do not know the identities of the 2 ladies except they are from VJC, even though we can’t get their numbers (dammit) I still wish to say Thank You for the support they have given us.

We reached Big Splash around 3pm. We have achieved what the previous batch set for their record. Now it is ultimately up to us to remake history and travel to new boundaries. Kallang Basin was our next target. The sea was getting rough as minutes passed by. I think we reached the mouth of Kallang Basin around 5pm. We were tired yet upbeat because finally we were about to complete our mission. My back was aching very badly by then. There were some students rowing past us with great speed with their canoes.1 strokes of their paddles and “Zoom” they instantly became a distant object. Nai Bei Chow Barney! We did not make an attempt to smile. I think the only thing they could see in our face can only be described by 1 word: “Shagged”.

Never before in the history of SSC has rowed this far out and reached Kallang Basin. I am pleased I’m part of the team that rewrite history. I heard the CO was very pleased by the effort we put in. I heard the CO was going into orgasm when we achieved our target. I am pleased that my buddy and I was sticking and supporting each other during the difficult journey.

The reward?

CSM indent us the barber to cut our hair for Mon POP parade.
and now I get a fcuking bird nest hairstyle which I hated it to the core..

Cheers to SSC 5. We made it.

A Whole New World

Somehow I think my grief has passed.

Somehow I think I didn’t miss her as much as in the past.

Perhaps I’ve been very busy lately. Perhaps I really did get over it without realizing.

I think I’m ready for a new relationship. I think I am able to share my life with another person. I think I’m not that childish and immature anymore. I think I should be able to handle the relationship as any mature individual do. I think…

I hope the feeling is not temporary.

But Piang Ehz, I’m not an actor I’m not a star and I don’t even have my own car. I’m not handsome and I think I’m just another ordinary soul you find at orchard every weekend. My social circle is not very big. I think I have difficulty introducing myself to members of the opposite sex.

But what the fcuk…life still have to go on. I am quite satisfied with what I have now.
